Senior Swimmers Celebrate Successful Season
January 31, 2020
This year, the Senior Swim Team includes Victoria Allen, Lauren Becerra, Hannah Ferrin, Madison Nash, and Caleb Budin. Each of these members of swim have made an important contribution to their team, and they will be missed as they graduate from high school.
Each have different stories for their swim careers and motivations to participate. Hannah Ferrin states, “I started swim my sophomore year because I wanted to try out a new sport.” Caleb Budin chose to try something new: “I started swimming because it was new to the school and I grew up around a lake so I figured I’d give it a shot.” Madison Nash adds, “I started swim because I wanted to play a winter sport but didn’t enjoy basketball Anymore and thought swim would be a good aerobic conditioning sport for running.” Additionally, Victoria Allen said, “I started swim sophomore year because it was the first year our school contracted with bellevue east. I wasn’t doing a winter sport and I thought that it could be a fun thing to do even though I had no previous experience with competitive swimming.”
As swimmers, these five seniors have discovered more about the sport and ultimately themselves. Victoria Allen said, “I was never in swim lessons. I’m one hundred percent self taught so I thought it was really cool to learn all the different strokes and how to dive off of a block as well as flip turns. I think that being a part of the team helped me to gain a few friends that I was never very close to before swim season and it gave me a few experiences that I’m glad I got to have.” Leadership is a key skill the team members have learned. Caleb Budin recaps, “As a senior I learned on how to be more of a leader and have learned to push myself harder to make state.” Madison Nash says, “I’ve learned leadership especially by being a team captain.” Furthermore Lauren Becerra says, “I’ve learned that a lot of the underclassmen, despite whether you’re good at the sport or not, look up to you especially for leadership. I also learned that I should’ve joined swim way sooner as I’ve really enjoyed this season and regret not doing it sooner!”
