Girls Basketball: Stepping Up and Bringing Focus
February 11, 2020
The Platteview High School (PHS) 2019-2020 Girls Varsity Basketball team has had an outstanding season; they’re currently ranking #3 in Class B and are making their way to the championship game of the Nebraska Capitol Conference Tournament. Coming back from facing “a slump around Christmas break,” according to senior Jessica Wellman, the team has recently “just got out of it and is starting to have fun again and not overthink.”
Playing the game of basketball is more than just games and practice. It also includes leadership and dedication to the team rather than just the sport. The senior leadership on the team is spectacular due to the large number of seniors on the team this year. Recognizing that this is their last year, these eight seniors want to make the most of the season and they encourage their teammates to do so as well. Though the team is very inviting and comforting of newcomers and previous players as Jessica Wellman tells us, their goal remains strict: “Our goal is to win State and to do that we know we need to focus every practice and make the most of every opportunity and not get lazy.” By being role models and “stepping up” during games and practices to show the underclassmen what is expected of them, the seniors are ready to give it their all and “go out on a high note” as it’ll be done before they know it.
By making the most of every opportunity and not slacking off during any practices, the PHS Girls Varsity Basketball Team has come a long way and are ready for more. Due to competitive practices, focusing, and giving it their all, the team is prepared for the journey ahead to State.
