Platteview Alumni Career Event: A Glimpse into Future Careers
February 26, 2020
Recently, high schools have begun a new push for student internships and student-based learning. The goal is to encourage students to get involved in and start learning about career paths that interest them. The options for young students are endless, but they need a small push in the right direction. Platteview also wishes to open these doors to students. The Platteview Alumni Career Event (PACE) is one way the school wants to help students become familiarized with options for their futures.
PACE has a similar set-up and overall goal as Careerockit. To be held Thursday, February 27, PACE will last through the morning classes. During the event, Platteview alumni will be separated into small groups consisting of alumni with similar fields of occupation. Student advisories will move between classrooms and participate in a mini master class with the alumni. In these sessions, lasting about fifteen to twenty minutes, speakers will introduce themselves and give a short explanation of what their jobs consist of. Afterwards, students will be able to interact with alumni during a question and answer session.
Mr. Jim Jennings is the organizer of this event. Through PACE he wants “to give current students a snapshot into future careers.” He decided to invite Platteview alumni to come talk with students because this will provide a fun way for students to connect with working men and women on a more personal level. When choosing speakers, Mr. Jennings stated, “I was looking for people with interesting stories.” He also said that the most important aspect of the event is “for students to be able to listen to people who were once sitting in the same chair you are in.” The goal of this event is to inform students of their options for future occupations and help them to form a vision for their futures.
