Platteview E-Sports strikes again! Over the February 11-15th weekend, the Overwatch Team defeated rival teams from Greensboro, St. Louis, and Orange County. In the finale, the team lost 2-4 against an Illinois team, but still took second place in a national competition. With the Overwatch season ending in success, the club is looking to dominate in new areas.

In the recent weeks the club has begun playing a new set of games against schools. These games include League of Legends, Super Smash Bros Ultimate, and Hearthstone. League of Legends is a strategy game in which two teams advance on each other to destroy a set of towers and finally the enemies base. Smash Bros is a fast paced fighting game with all your favorite Nintendo characters. Lastly, there is Hearthstone. Hearthstone is a turn based card game where two players go head to head with a hero that has unique abilities and their deck, with a goal of draining the other heroes health.

The team has played Skutt, Marian, and competed at a tournament in Grand Island. The League of Legends team did not take part in the tournament, but did win against Skutt. Smash beat Skutt and placed fourth overall in the tournament. Finally Hearthstone wasn’t able to play Skutt, but Maverick Jensen placed first on the game at Grand Island.”I was pretty upset I couldn’t be with the rest of the team, but know that all my practice is paying off is a really good feeling,” Maverick Jensen (12) Along with that, Smash Bros team 2, consisting of Corbin Fibich and Kaden Slaughter, placed 6th in the tournament.

With the team winning state Overwatch last semester, a celebratory article in the Omaha World Herald, and these placements in the tournament, you would think the team might be picking up some attention. As a matter of fact, it has- the school board decided to give a grant to the team to possibly open a few more doors for the kids who take part. Using this the team has been able to get new consoles, Nintendo Switches for games such as Rocket League and Smash Bros, and a new computer to begin streaming the matches and tournaments live online. This major upgrade allows the team to do so much more than they imagined.
