High School students experienced their first day of the 2023-2024 school year on Wednesday, August 16th.
The first day is full of different emotions. It can be nerve wracking and exciting for many students. Students happily reconnect with their friends after a summer apart, making new friends, nervous about starting new classes, interested in learning new things and new experiences. Some people are nervous meeting new people, while others are excited. Harry Almick (9th grade) stated, “My first day of school was amazing. I thought this because I got to see a lot of friends. Also the work was very easy and fun.”
The first day is also a time for students to make new friends, overcome fears, and set new goals for the future. Many students have academic and personal goals. An academic goal could be as simple as passing all their classes. And personal goals are goals students set for themselves to achieve that might be outside the classroom. Sabrin Muse (11th grade) said, “ My goals for this year is to turn in my work on time. I’m capable and understand the concept in question but struggle with procrastination.”
High school curriculum can also be difficult for new 9th grade students, along with the other new expectations and changes from middle school. Students are expected to complete a multitude of different tasks that all come with expectations to prepare. Iris Orellana (9th grade) said, “I prepared by going to orientation and getting used to the highschool and the people, the night before I made sure to go to bed early so I could get the day started tomorrow.”
With the first day of school 2023-2024 in the books, many PHS students are now starting new routines, making connections, finding their classes, and establishing their best learning environment.
