On the first day of school, August 16, 2023, Platteview high school’s educators were once again filled with the busy school schedule. But what many might not know: many of PHS staff have children who are students inside and/or outside the school district. So what do these teacher/student families’ schedules look like?
Allison Behrens, PHS art teacher, has three kids, one in 2nd grade and the other two in pre-k. The Behrens family wakes up early in the morning to take their dogs out, then waking up the kids. They make breakfast for the family and take the kids to school while heading to work. Mrs. Behrens thinks the biggest advantage of being a teacher and having children in the district is “having summer and winter break with my kids.”
Anna Hartwig, one of Platteview’s beloved English teachers, has two children, one in 4th grade and the other in 9th grade. In preparation for the next morning, the Hartwig family packs lunches and plans breakfast for the next morning. Everyone wakes up early enough so not feel rushed. When asked about the advantages of being a teacher while her students are in school, Mrs. Hartwig replied, “I think it helps in understanding all of the stress and time management that teachers face. I’m also able to help my kids with technology and my content area.”
While preparing for school in the morning can bring various challenges for all ages, parents and students alike, hearing from Mrs. Behrens and Mrs. Hartwig, having a plan, relying on family for help, and having a positive attitude seems to be a great recipe for daily success.
