Kaden Slaughter and Andi Carman (Sprout) are senior E-Sports members at Platteview High School. Even though they will be leaving PHS behind in May 2024, they will take their fond memories of E-Sports with them and provide a growing legacy for the team.
Sprout, President of E-sports, first joined the team during her freshman year through her friends’ persistent encouragement. She explained, “Practices consist of warming up, depending on the game. Competitions look a lot like practices, but they ‘are worth all the marbles.’” A few of Sprout’s favorite memories from E-Sports are when the team hosted a retro arcade and switch raffle. Sprout had a great time, saying, “It was really fun having all the old arcade games ready for the public to use.” Sprout encourages all grades to join the team because students get to play two hours worth of gaming while enjoying snacks.
Kaden Slaughter joined E-Sports his freshman year, as it peaked his gaming interests. He said that practices mostly consist of hanging out with friends, while competitions can range from easy-going to very competitive. Kaden sees E-Sports as “one big afternoon hang out session.” His favorite memory is from his sophomore year when they were victorious at the Mario Kart State Championship. When asked why people should join E-Sports, Kaden says that the club is “basically a chance to spend time with friends after school while playing fun video games.”
