Public speaking is an overwhelming fear for many people. Speaking to an audience takes confidence, control, and a positive mindset. Public speaking is a skill that is sometimes required like in school assignments, presentations or reading a speech. Lots of students have the fear of speaking, tripping, or mumbling their words. However, here are a few strategies to help anyone become a successful and confident speaker.
1. Before starting a speech, take deep breaths and practice self affirmations and self courage.
2. Take your time and begin when you are ready to speak. It’s okay if you trip over your words.
3. Push yourself through the end, even if you feel like you’re embarrassing yourself.
4. Instead of focusing on the negatives, instead focus on how you tried your hardest and what you could have done better.
Elly Harmon(10) says “The hardest part about public speaking is feeling people’s eyes on me and worrying people are judging me.”
5. Try to be more open to criticism is another tip, thinking of criticism as an opportunity to learn.
And most importantly, 6. Get involved in PHS clubs like One Act, Speech and Theater. These extracurriculars give students a chance to express themselves, raise their confidence, help with communication and public speaking skills.
