Everyone has seen the famous story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; but not everyone knows the story behind the classic childhood film. Paul King’s Wonka made its long awaited debut in theaters December 15, 2023, starring Timothee Chalamet, Hugh Grant, and Calah Lane. The film serves as a prequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and follows the story of a young Willy Wonka and his dreams of becoming a famous chocolate maker. Through many trials and tribulations, Willy embarks on a terrific journey to be a part of the big league chocolatiers in London.
Many viewers, myself included, were upset that previous advertisements didn’t include the fact that the film was a musical. However, after seeing the movie, I was pleasantly surprised. Not only was I surprised that the songs were uniquely catchy, but the vocals of all the actors left me very impressed.
Another strong aspect of the film was the plotline. It was warm, happy, reliving, and easy-to-follow. It made me laugh, gasp, cry, and every emotion in between.
One critic, Terry Staunton, remarks, “Chalamet’s ‘Candy Man’ is lovably eccentric.”
Overall, I suggest movie goers see the film. It is a fun backstory to a classic work, has catchy music, and the custom and sets provide a visual feast. You won’t be disappointed.
