Platteview High School started a boys tennis program for the 2024-2025 school year. The program is coached by PHS teacher Alex Nielsen, and the new team has interested a number of students. Over 20 boys have signed up for the team at the beginning of the school year.
The team practices at the tennis courts in Hawaiian Village. They push each other to perform better. They are improving their skills rapidly together. Many teammates have stated they are excited to play, and are planning on trying for varsity. Tony Guerrero (11) stated his ultimate goals for this season are to “to win and get on varsity.” Getting onto varsity is competitive and only the best of the best will achieve it.
Despite several of the teammates having never played tennis, the team is advancing in leaps and bounds. The team has worked diligently for weeks to better their skills. They have learned a multitude of techniques and skills including swing techniques, serving, and blocking. Their skills will improve throughout the season. Casey Gray (11) stated “We have been putting in that work and we’ve made lots of progress so far.”
The team has set several goals for the upcoming season. These goals range from simply having fun to getting to play on varsity. Several members’ goals revolve around improving their skills. The tennis team’s coach reflects this statement. Alex Nielsen said, “My goals for the season are to keep improving every day and for use to build some confidence as a team.”
The team continues to work hard as they kick off their season at Nebraska City on August 29th.
