Throughout a teacher’s career, they stumble upon a multitude of moments that reside in their memory for decades. Ranging from brief moments in the classroom to competing at state competitions, these cherished memories are what make teaching worthwhile.
Teachers at PHS enjoy interacting with their students in many ways. For example, Coach Baker helps students study in the afternoon. He comments that he enjoys, “Interacting with students during study hall, playing a variety of games, and having a fun time bonding with students. I enjoy helping with the weights class and helping them improve their physical abilities and accomplishing new goals.” Bonding with students is one of the most important aspects of being an educator.
Unique events happen in the sports world that leave people with great memories. Mr. Hopp’s favorite memory while teaching at Platteview was watching the girls’ basketball district final game in 2014. He described, “It was a packed house at Elkhorn South High School. We were trailing with two and a half seconds left in the game. We inbounded the ball for some set play, Kenzie Kulm released a half court shot. When the ball was in the air, I turned to Mrs. Hansen, the art teacher, and told her ‘It’s going in.’ The ball did make it in! Pandemonium erupted and the team qualified for state.”
History teacher, Mr. Comine, stated that his favorite memory was students coming together after the horrific 9/11 attacks, saying, “The patriotism that kids showed after 9/11 has always stood out to me. Kids in classes were saying how they were going to enlist in the military. We also held a ceremony out on the football field for the 1 year anniversary of 9/11 on the Veterans Day program. Kids have come back to tell about their experiences in the military.”
Trojan teachers make new memories each and every school year. Whether just a brief moment during the day or a game-changing play, these memories are things that teachers can reminisce on for years to come.
