On April 11, 2025 the PHS publications class attended a field trip at the University of Omaha. This field trip covered communication, fine arts, and media. This was the 66th year of the event. A record high of 22 schools attended this field trip where students could attend two breakout sessions. Presenters from the Omaha World Herald, WOWT, ESPN, KETV all gave presentations to students about their career. After the breakout sessions, ESPN reporter Holly Rowe gave a keynote address about how she started her career. She spoke about challenges she faced along the way and how she was able to overcome them.
Students were able to attend two breakout sessions ranging from writing to photography, reporting to editing. Junior Isabelle Arbuckle described, “I attended news writing where I learned you should write for the betterment of people.” These short but informative sessions were both effective and engaging, and countless aspiring journalists got to learn key tips for progressing their careers.
The day wrapped up with awards. Leading up to this field trip, schools could submit broadcasts, photos, articles, and newspapers to be considered for competition. Trojans Erin Wyss (11) won best newspaper layout, Ada Heneger (12) won 3rd place sports photography and 3rd place in short form audio, and Braxton Donley (9) won 3rd place in entertainment writing.
