At Platteview High School, our mission this school year is to bring our student body and community closer together while lifting one another up. We are dedicated to creating an environment where students grow academically, socially, and emotionally, all while building a strong and supportive culture.
To guide this mission, the staff at PHS identified four key values: relationship, intentional, perseverance, and community. Principal Mr. McLaughlin explained the importance of these values:
“If we are going to continue improving as a school, we felt the culture needed to be a priority. We are incredibly lucky to have a good culture influenced heavily by the Springfield community. One of our identified core values is intentional, and moving forward, we cannot take for granted a positive school culture. We need to be proactive and very intentional about it while modeling and teaching what we believe are important approaches to providing a positive experience for everyone at PHS. Every school has rules. These are not rules. They are guidelines that tell us who we want to be, not just what we can or cannot do, and how we expect to treat others. Specific core values help us identify who we are and how we all can expect to be treated.”
Relationship
The first core value emphasizes the importance of building meaningful connections within the school community. At Platteview, relationships are demonstrated daily as students and staff interact with respect, empathy, and support. These connections create trust, strengthen the learning environment, and positively shape students’ experiences.
Intentional
Being intentional means acting with purpose, not only in school but in all aspects of life. It is about making conscious choices, setting goals, and following through with effort and dedication. Students at PHS demonstrate intentionality by engaging deeply in their learning, taking responsibility for their actions, and striving to achieve their personal best.
Perseverance
Perseverance highlights determination, resilience, and the ability to overcome challenges. Whether in academics, athletics, or personal growth, students are encouraged to face obstacles with grit and persistence. Through perseverance, they learn that setbacks are opportunities for growth and that effort is essential to long-term success.
Community
The final value, community, focuses on fostering belonging, school pride, and connection. At Platteview, this is expressed through partnerships with families, participation in school activities, and engagement with the local community. Students who embrace community develop empathy, responsibility, and a stronger sense of identity.
Living the Mission
These four values, relationship, intentional, perseverance, and community, extend far beyond the classroom. By embracing them, students gain skills and mindsets that prepare them for life after high school.
Mr. McLaughlin explained:
“You’re more likely to succeed when you feel seen, safe, and supported. We want you to lift each other up, treat others with respect, empathy, and kindness, to listen, support, and include each other, to not just go through the motions while understanding we are all in this together. The focus is not being perfect but learning and growing together in a supportive environment where excellence and achievement are celebrated.”
Platteview’s core values are central to guiding students toward becoming responsible, respectful, and resilient citizens. Carefully chosen to reflect the school’s mission, these values inspire students to grow together as learners, leaders, and members of the Trojan community.
