Writing is a skill learned from a young age that gradually gets more informational as useful as you get older. Children in elementary, middle or even high school struggle to find good reasons for learning and obtaining the skills of reading and writing. Therefore, one of Platteview High school’s most respected teachers, Dr. Kersulov, decided to have a special guest for his technical writing classes to interview: Deputy Huff.
Special guest Deputy Huff sat at the front of Dr. Kersulov’s classroom, answering questions about what his job entails on a day to day basis. Students were shocked to find out most of Huff’s job revolves mainly around writing. Huff explained how his top priority while in school is safety. Monitoring the halls, making sure doors are locked and secured, along with enforcing criminal law while on campus. When asked about how much of his job consists of writing he explained that, “99% is report writing and 1% is fun.”
Huff continued, “Writing reports is a part of academy training, so you will learn to get really good at it. It’s needed for any criminal or law violation.”
Deputy Huff stressed to not only the students but Dr. Kersulov as well, how important being skilled and detailed in your writing is, especially in law enforcement. Judges, prosecutors, and attorneys are the typical audiences for similar reports, so it’s important to be as detailed about the situation as possible to try and paint a picture of what happened.
Huff expressed his frustration with his younger self for not paying better attention in writing class saying, “Take it seriously because law enforcement is not the only job you’ll have writing. If you have a good basis for writing, you won’t struggle in the real world whether paper or digital.”
