Finals are an extremely important and stressful time of year. It can be difficult to stay focused when the holidays are just around the corner. The looming threat of a poor grade mixed with the anxiety of the winter season can lead a student to feeling overwhelmed, overworked, and overall spent.
Finals mark the end of the year and the start of a long break; however, the workload can bring stress to students and teachers alike. With eight periods all with their own work it becomes a lot. As stated by Eleni Mustakes (9), “It’s really important to use your time wisely and once you get a schedule down, it becomes a lot more manageable.” You can do this by setting times to study, or using the helpful tools your teachers provide for review. It’s important to know your limits and what will work best for you.
Regardless of how much you plan, you’re probably still going to experience some stress. This is completely normal at this time of year. There are practical ways to handle stress. Do not cram late at night. Sleep is important for memory and focus. Your diet can also affect your ability to study. So eating a balanced diet; protein, carbs, etc. can help your finals go smoother. Find ways to relax and take breaks as needed. In the words of Cade Dill (9), “Take deep breaths and listen to music.”
Learning is different for everyone so study how you want to. Take you time, finals do not have to be stressful. A good attitude and even better study ethic puts you one step closer to acing that final.
