James Baughman (9) and Austin Martin (9) fought hard at the 2026 District Wrestling, hard enough to punch their ticket to the 2026 State Wrestling Championship at the CHI Health Center.
With relentless preparation and dedication throughout the season, both were fully prepared when the district tournament came around. From the very first practice, they put in countless hours each day refining their form, sharpening their technique, and building overall strength. Conditioning drills, live matches, and extra time after practice became part of their routine. Another major focus was the mental aspect of wrestling. When asked how he mentally prepared for districts, Baughmann said, “I just have to trust what I do and stay to my offense. I know I belong on the podium with everyone else no matter their record or who they are.” His confidence highlights how critical mindset is in a sport where matches can be decided in seconds.
Baughmann and Martin both finished with 3-2 records at Districts, earning the opportunity to compete at the State Championship. Stepping onto that big stage brought a whole new level of pressure. The atmosphere was electric, and the competition was tougher than ever.
Martin said, “State was such a different experience compared to any other regular match. There were bigger crowds, louder cheering, and a lot more nerves came with the new pressure.”
Baughmann described the moment as unforgettable. “It felt surreal in the moment with everyone around me going crazy. I thought about how I’ve attended state in that arena my whole life just watching, but now I would actually be living that experience.”
For both wrestlers, simply qualifying as freshmen was a major accomplishment and a testament to their discipline and perseverance.
Although the boys went 0-2 at State, the experience gave them a clear picture of what it takes to compete at the highest level. They saw firsthand the speed, strength, and precision required to succeed. Instead of discouragement, the outcome fueled their motivation. As underclassmen, they have three more years to grow stronger, gain experience, and chase even bigger goals. With the lessons learned this season and the work ethic they’ve already established, Baughmann and Martin are just getting started.
